The Slow Burn Star - Olivia Dean's Journey to 'The Art of Loving'

Before Olivia Dean became one of the UK's current biggest voices, she was quietly soaking in the sounds that would shape her future. Growing up in London, her household was full of classic soul with that style of storytelling pop that lingers long after its finished. Music wasn’t something she just listened to, it was the emotional vocabulary of her childhood home. 

As a teenager, Dean began writing songs as a way to make sense of the world around her. Those earlier years that were marked by school performances, makeshift bedroom demos and small gigs around London have helped her home a sound that feels both familiar and refreshingly sincere. It's this balance of old-soul warmth and modern honesty that has become her signature feel. 

Olivia Dean didn’t immediately rise to fame, it was a slow and steady glow that kept growing until everyone had to turn their heads to her sound. After a handful of early singles introduced that uniquely warm and unmistakable tone, listeners began to gravitate toward the sincerity of her music. Olivia doesn’t follow musical trends, she's found her own footing in the industry whilst inviting people in, offering a moment of quiet vulnerability and confessions in a world obsessed with volume. 

Her live performances became a significant part of her ascent, whether she was singing in intimate venues or appearing in thoughtfully arranged live sessions. Oliva's release of her latest album 'The Art of Loving' came out in September, off the back of opening gigs for Sam Fender's People Watching tour as well as their release of 'Rein Me In'.  

The release of Dean's second studio album is what really helped rise her to fame, topping the charts for one hundred and thirteen weeks and making sure everyone knows her name. The record being nominated for a handful of awards, such as MOBO's Album of the year, and multiple awards at the BRITS. 

The Art of Loving dives deep into all areas of love, Olivia explores a deep and personal adventure of loving and losing. The album is a poetic conversation, the twelve track record echoes falling in love, longing and the discovery of self-worth. Every track connects with every listener in their own unique and personal ways, Olivia making all of her fans feel not only heard but understood. 

Olivia made this album by reflecting on love as not a single feeling but an entire genre of emotion. She explores love as something you practice and learn, she speaks on love like its craft – making it 'The Art of Loving'. The themes of love in this record go further than just being in love with someone, it dives into self love, acceptance, vulnerability and healing.  

The album being recorded in a home studio set up in East London really helped the making of the album. The set up encouraged Olivia to be more open and gave her a comfortable space to explore her vulnerability. She represents love as messy and complicated rather then something straightforward. She explains that love is layered and needs to be understood instead of just felt. 

The Art of Loving helped Dean grow as an artist and in popularity because of the honest nature the album holds. It taught Olivia how to be more open when writing, and helping fans feel understood. 

This record has definitely soundtracked everyone's lives since the release in September of 2025 and will continue to soundtrack 2026.
